mod_rewrite is enabled by default by most hosting providers. By default, most hosting providers use mod_fcgid or mod_fastcgi so PHP runs as a CGI rather than an Apache module. When PHP runs as a CGI, PHP cannot access the list of enabled Apache modules. This information is only exposed when PHP runs as an Apache module. Mod_rewrite however is not required for the installation process if you are using Apache 2+. If you are server is using Apache 1.3 however, it will be required and you may need to contact your hosting provier to have them assist you in confirming that mod_rewrite is enabled. A quick way to check if mod_rewrite is enabled is to look at your URL. If you don't see index.php in your URL, mod_rewrite is enabled and is already being used, so you can proceed with the installation steps.

Ask your server support about mod_rewrite for apache. This module must be enabled.
