How to customize encrypted plugin?

I've purchased few plugins for SocialEngine, but some of the features are missing. I found a developer to add them (as plugin company was busy).

The problem is some plugins code is encrypted (no functions or variables visible, just a wall of numbers and slashes). Plugin developer tells those are license files only, developers I've contacted tell those are basic functions.

Has anybody had this problem? Who is right here? And what's this encryption required for?

I saw that recently with SEAddons plugins (we have a client who uses their Pages plugin). They refuse to provide unencrypted code claiming it's a license file. Yet that license file contains functionality as well (for example form processing). I think that was done to prevent piracy.

Code can be decrypted. It's still hard to read, but possibly to modify. However it takes much more time.

I think that encryption is a terrible idea. It does not stop pirates, but makes modifications much more expensive.

    What's the plugin?

Is it possible to explain the situation to developers? Maybe it's easier to ask them to make changes you need. Though, this situation isn't good if the code is encrypted.
